CHRIS’S OPINION My phone company had a deal about a month ago where it offered users the option to have 500 free SMS messages a month. You paid 20 cents for every SMS message after that. Great, I thought, I dont use SMS messages much anyway so there is one cost I won’t have to pay. Well, someone certainly had done his or her research. I soon found myself having SMS chat conversations; not just a couple of back and forth messages, but conversations that went all day. Suffice it to say my phone company certainly got a good return on its investment of the 500 free SMS messages.

Now with the new Internet SMS message service I can see myself finding yet another bad habit to get sucked right into. It is people like me that keep companies with ideas like this going. I am going to give the services I mentioned above a go tonight. I’m hoping the novelty will wear off quick, since my phone bill is high enough as is:-) Can any other geeks relate to my addiction to new services like this?

Do other geeks use new services just for the sake of using them? I’m sure it’s not just me.:-) USER COMMENTS (454 comments). Piggyback low proirity (1:24pm EST Thu Jul 20 2000) An interesting feature would be to allow someone to mark a message as low priority and then have the system hold until you either place a call or have an incoming. Then the message transfer could take place, piggybacked with the voice call and save a bit of money. The payoff for the company is to make their system more popular than the compitition.

– by Jefferson Nothing new (1:40pm EST Thu Jul 20 2000) SMS is nothing new, it’s been around for many years now. Those pages that let you send SMS messages, well, those are useless as providers already have web to sms features on their pages. I must say, 20 cents a message after the first 500 is pretty expensive. I get free unlimited SMS with Fido. I can’t send any though, because I’m on a prepaid plan.

But if I ever really want or need to send SMS messages from my phone in the future, I can always just sign up on the $20/200 postpaid plan and get unlimited outbound SMS for $2/mo. Until then, I’ll stick with prepaid, which costs me $5/mo (or more, depending on how much time I use). – by Ryan Not new?

(2:14pm EST Thu Jul 20 2000) This isn’t so new I’ve got a Clearnet phone and ppl have been sending me short text messages at for over a year now. But’s still convenient at times =) – by ez. Ain’t nothing new (2:19pm EST Thu Jul 20 2000) I’ve been receiving SMS to and from people for quite some time, including from web sites and specialized computer programs. You can even send an SMS through e-mail in some cases, where the provider provides you an address (usually something like “your 10 digit #”.”provider name”). Europe seems to have loads more fun we do with sending stuff like ring tones and logos through SMS. – by John SMS Uses (3:26pm EST Thu Jul 20 2000) I was wondering how the Web SMS messages could be useful to me.

I soon thought that sending yourself a SMS message at work would be a useful tool that would be just like post-it notes on the phone, any ideas? – by Chris Ring tones and Graphics (4:34pm EST Thu Jul 20 2000) I use SMS to send myself new ring tones and graphics for my cell.
